Maybe. I hate hardcoding things, and what you suggest sounds like that.
There is at least one other driver using sl-modem-daemon for
non-SmartLink modems, and I expect other to come. So what will happen
next?

sl-modem-daemon is a product created for SmartLink modems and those are
accessible via the snd-intel8x0m module.

Does my init script work if you load the module _before_ the script
runs?
