Dear Guido, Not much to add to this thread, except that this morning I spent one hour searching how to use git-import-orig in a repository created by following the instructions on ‘http://wiki.debian.org/Alioth/Git#ConvertaSVNAliothrepositorytoGit’, and figured out almost the same solution after intense googling (‘http://book.git-scm.com/5_creating_new_empty_branches.html‘, with the --alow-empty trick being well hidden in the screencast…).
I confirm that the --empty-upstream option will be a great addition, very useful for people who migrate from svn-buildpackage: the direct manipulations of the git repository internals are kind of scary for beginners :) In the meantime, if you do not mind, I will add a link to this bug report in the above wiki page.
