It would be possible but only with major rewrites of the init scripts and
all the config files.

You can probably easy do it for yourself by using a modified copy of
/etc/init.d/mysql to provide an alternative /etc/mysql/my.cnf config file
which points to totally different socket and database paths but given the
small number of people that benefit from this, I consider it too much work
for the standard distribution.
