The reason was that at the first time somebody announced Sarge as "soon to be frozen" (a year ago or so *g*) the 4.1 branch was not yet very mature and I was afraid of releasing Sarge with a too buggy version although MySQL already declared it as stable. Also, many packages already linked against the libmysqlclient from that branch and had all to be rebuild against 4.1.
