Since the packages conflict with each other, I don't think it's easy to install (not to talk about keeping up to date).

/etc/init.d/mysql to provide an alternative /etc/mysql/my.cnf config file
which points to totally different socket and database paths but given the
small number of people that benefit from this, I consider it too much work
for the standard distribution.

I'm sure you know Linux is a multi-user OS. ;->
Multiple users may like multiple different database version.
After all, there's a good reason why both 4.0 and 4.1 are in Sarge, isn't there?

their scripts and thus only use one server.
If they want a devel or test environment they probably have a separate
server with copies of all scripts anyway.
