Package: unalz http://packages.debian.org/lenny/unalz I noticed that Debian main contains this package. I must inform Debian that it seems to be clearly Non-Free Software.
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=477106 Fedora just rejected unalz for inclusion because examination of its source and webpage revealed that it is non-commercial only, with an explicit prohibition on distributing it with any modifications. http://www.kipple.pe.kr/win/unalz/unalz-0.62.tgz The source tarball is understandably ambiguous, leading one who is not careful to believe that it is Open Source because the zlib and bzip2 licenses are the only visible licenses. Further adding to the ambiguity is most of the source files lacking proper attribution of copyright and license notices. http://www.kipple.pe.kr/win/unalz/ http://www.kipple.pe.kr/etc/freeware_license/ A reading of their website and especially the "license" which is unfortunately only in the Korean language, it is abundantly clear. The unalz code was aggregated with zlib licensed code, with a highly visible zlib license in the tarball. However the combined work is "freeware" where commercial distribution is prohibited. It allows redistribution only unmodified, and patches must be separate. At the bottom it explains the difference between "free software" and "freeware" and states that this software is the latter. Our Fedora packager is asking the author for Free Software license terms, but I am not holding out hope if the author went through the trouble of explaining on his site that it is not Free Software.
