You don't need to restart X, but I suppose you also need to downgrade
fontconfig-config and maybe libfontconfig1; this is what I did.

In the meantime, Joss and me had discussed this in the thread starting
at http://lists.debian.org/debian-release/2008/11/msg00522.html.
Unfortunately I forgot to CC [EMAIL PROTECTED] when I jumped in
there, so here is the conclusion: after upgrading to 2.6.0-3, you need
to "dpkg-reconfigure fontconfig-config" and enable bitmapped fonts
there.  Additionally, you need to run "fc-cache -fs" as root afterwards.
