The problem with the current packaging is that
System.Web.Extensions.dll is missing without this being obvious. Yes,
it's documented in changelog.Debian.gz (who reads this file upon
installation???), but doesn't seem to be hinted anywhere else. When trying
web applications (specifically, Mojoportal), then it is non-obvious why it
fails when all documentation says it should work.
Please re-include System.Web.Extension.dll, either by removing or
replacing the non-DFSG code or, as a quick solution, a separate
package in non-free. This will allow standard web applications to work
in Debian (when they work perfectly with the official mono
distributions).
The "quick solution" is actually significantly harder to make happen,
for various reasons.
The problem code has actually been released under a new (DFSG-friendly)
license in the development version of Mono, so if you were to prepare a
dpatch file against 1.9.1+dfsg-3 containing System.Web.Extensions from
Mono SVN, we would be open to including it. However, with Lenny frozen,
we can't make any promises.
Post-Lenny, (i.e. once Mono 2.0 is in Debian), the problem will go away.
