I must have misunderstood the comment.  My understanding was that it
would only crash in some settings and for some users/machine types,
not every time the state was non-normal.  If it crashes every time the
state is non-normal, I agree that it is a grave issue, as it make the
package unusable or mostly so.  Does it?  These are the definitions I
use to decide which severity it deserves:

  grave
    makes the package in question unusable or mostly so, or causes
    data loss, or introduces a security hole allowing access to the
    accounts of users who use the package.
  important
    a bug which has a major effect on the usability of a package,
    without rendering it completely unusable to everyone.
