I had tried pretty much that (though nervously), but I didn't get to
install anything.  My apt-get update blew up with "E: Dynamic MMap ran
out of room", and since I'd been guessing I backed off.  I've now
followed web instructions to increase some magic parameter or other,
and got round that one...

... and found (as you predicted) that it wants to perform major
package surgery to try the new versions.  If I get a few hours with
nothing vital to do I'll give it a try.
