I failed to build the lucene cvs head using ant 1.6.2 -
myhost% JAVA_HOME=/usr/share/kaffe ant -Dbuild.rmic=kaffe ant
[...]
BUILD FAILED
/home/jablko/src/lucene/svn/lucene/java/trunk/build.xml:165: Cannot use Kaffe rmic, as it is not available. A common solution is to set the environment variable JAVA_HOME or CLASSPATH.

I guess the problem is ant's kaffe rmic adaptor - KaffeRmic.java - & the new path to kaffe rmic - http://thread.gmane.org/gmane.comp.jakarta.gump/9604
This bug is fixed in ant cvs head - I successfully built lucene with the latest ant - it's just not fixed in debian yet
