Hi ! I have also tried roundcube on a fresh unstable box in qemu.
I have used the following command to install roundcube : aptitude install sqlite php5-sqlite php5 libapache2-mod-php5 roundcube And I have uncommented the alias in /etc/apache2/conf.d/roundcube. No problem to connect to a remote IMAP server (a dovecot IMAP server on a Etch server). If you want to reproduce my setup, you will need to use the installer in expert mode and select "none" for the kernel. It needs to be installed by hand : chroot /target aptitude install linux-image-2.6.20-1-686 before installing Grub for example.
