The same problem happens with on debian 4.0 stable, xmms v 1:1.2.10 +20061.
I have to type LANG=C in a console and then open xmms in the SAME console, and then the menus display fine. If I open xmms through gnome menu (or in another console), it does not work. I am not facing this problem with mplayer (this is not compiled but from the debian 4.0 repo). So the question arises of whether this is really a problem with gtk1.2 or xmms-specific.
