There is nothing better to wish for than killing ivritex. If we can use Hebrew from the default TexLive distribution I'd be happy to kill IvriTex. I wouldn't worry about the jerus10 font and the others, they are ugly! A way to automatically ue culmus fonts would be much better. I'm not sure about the exact state of ivritex upstream, I know it advanced since I last looked but I'm not sure how it works with current babel. I understand that Tzafrir Cohen triedto contact the babel maintainer to update babel with the needed changes but got no response, if there is an alternative maintainer or TexLive maintain their own copy we'll be happy to merge any needed changes into babel.
