I initially thought I had a problem with denemo, but was able to reproduce a complete system lockup when playing MIDI files, given sufficient hard disk activity using:

aplaymidi -p17:0
playmidi -a
kmid

The first 2 were tried under twm, all 3 methods were tried under KDE.

Any suggestions on further debugging steps welcome.

I have a soudblaster with emu10k1 chip. Following midi modules are
loaded:
snd_seq_virmidi
snd_seq_midi_emul
snd_seq_midi
snd_seq_midi_event
snd_rawmidi

Can you confirm?

$ lsmod|grep snd

snd_emu10k1_synth       6912  0
snd_emux_synth         30496  1 snd_emu10k1_synth

Else make sure no artsd is running to with aplaymidi.

OK, I tried disabling the sound system under the KDE Control Centre but still reproduced the lock-up (as well as under twm).
