I have no idea right now if the dependency on POT is a long term
thing, or if it will disappear in a couple releases.
Off-topic for Debian, I guess, but: Have you considered Hera as a way to
get efficient Wasserstein distances?

Yes I have, it is likely to be in the next release ;-)
- Someone wrote the POT version first, it was easier to merge
- The POT version is "exact" and faster than Hera for small point sets
- We are going to need the matching soon, not just the cost, and Hera
doesn't provide that yet.
