You are not printing through hplip... You need an HP backend printer in CUPS to use hplip, and since the other utilities (even those that have nothing to do with printing) use that information, it is no wonder things are not working. Anyway, since you have an USB device, it is likely that hplip will work just fine. Try setting it up for hplip, and see if it helps any.
