Yes, based on subsequent discussions with Sam, I'm pretty sure this was the
bug.  I do still have an alpha on which to try reproducing it, but I had
been using XFS for so long that I'll have to dust off the corner of my brain
that remembers how to use AFS. :)

Go ahead and close the bug; I'm content to assume that it was the XFS bug,
not an alpha bug, and just open a fresh one if I find out later that this
was not the case.
