I recently migrated from Ubuntu to Debian and with it came my gaim preferences verbatim. I had set spell checking on in my Ubuntu preferences so I naturally thought it would migrate over to Debian. I noticed after a while that it did not check my spelling and wondered why. I tried installing aspell and noticed that it worked thereafter. After removing aspell and looking at the gaim debug window I saw "gtkspell: Failed to setup GtkSpell: aspell: No word lists can be found for the language "en_US"." This error should be more visible since aspell is only a suggested, not required package from libaspell15. I think that aspell should probably be a required package or at least have gaim complain more loudly that spell checking will not work.
