Upon reading the Debian package relationship policy I understand that spelling should only be a recommended package for gaim. What is still unclear to me however is what libaspell15 can do without apsell. Having gaim require libaspell15 seems to do very little since libaspell15 alone adds no spell checking ability. I realize that the dependency issue is minor but I really think that gaim should at least inform the user that if spell checking is enabled and aspell is missing that spell checking will not work. Not everyone thoroughly examines all of the recommending packages when they are installing their entire system (ie. KDE+firefox+gaim+etc).

As I said already in the bug closing message: Package: libaspell15 Recommends: aspell-en | aspell-dictionary | aspell6a-dictionary
