Hrm, I must admit, I wouldn't care that much about it. I mean, that's
what conffile prompts are for. :-) But I understand your preference.

Since adequate only has long options so far, what about "--exit-code"
or even "--also-report-via-exit-code"?

I'll likely add adequate as a standalone test to every package to
which I add autopkgtests. (But I don't think I should add autopkgtests
just to add adequate -- IMHO it doesn't suffice, except for maybe pure
documentation packages without functionality.)

Hrm, maybe it would be helpful if adequate ships an example for that
in /usr/share/doc/examples/ or such. Will file a separate
feature request for that. :-)
