The only hypothetical situation that would result in dropping gnome is one where the TC enacts language barring dependencies on non-default init systems. In all other cases systemd remains in debian, and gnome can remain by using systemd. So, to lets take a step back from this hypothetical cliff by removing that idea from the discussion.
