Renaming to 15-mailboxes.conf.disable fixes the problem, as does adding a
proper namespace inbox section with inbox=yes, but of course it is not
possible to just overwrite 10-mail.conf during the package upgrade, and
adding 15-mailboxes.conf is unconditional, so effectively the upgrade breaks
dovecot and makes mailboxes inaccessible.
Unfortunately versions of dovecot 2.1.7 prior to -3 omitted several
configuration files. 15-mailboxes.conf is one that should have been there
all along. I'm sorry for the inconvenience but this breakage shouldn't
happen again going forward. Adding an inbox namespace section is the
proper course of action and one which should have been enforced with -1.
At the very least, the following line from 15-mailboxes.conf should be in the
NEWS file
# NOTE: Assumes "namespace inbox" has been defined in 10-mail.conf.
Yeah I definitely need to document this better.
