Okay, less than 24hrs uptime and the system froze completely. I was really 
hoping (with dumb luck) the newly landed 3.2.35 kernel would help out even 
though there were no specific nouveaux changes.

No, this time I was unable to switch to another console

Yes, the mouse pointer was still moving

Still no common trigger. This time I was using synaptic package manager. 
Fortunately no critical operation was underway, just refreshing the package 
database.
