Review Comment:
   I had initially decided against that because I wasn't sure we wanted to 
allow for things like direct timestamp <-> long comparisons. But thinking about 
it a little more, that should anyway be handled at a different (higher) layer 
than this. So we can definitely update this check to compare the stored types 
here.

   Yeah, I think that makes sense since the point of this was to maintain
