I have not pulled a C&C toe rail myself, but IIRC one of the listers has. What stuck in my memory is the aluminum extrusion wants to go back to straight when released from the hull to deck joint.
It may be prudent to plan for some spring back and control the “stored energy” of the bent toe rail. I also have read the most favored re-bedding compound is the original butyl tape. There is a web site, maybe “Maine Sail” or something similar that has a great tutorial on butyl tape and sells the product. I purchased some from them a while back but have not yet reached the re-bedding hardware phase of Calypso’s deck repair project to make use of it. Let me know if you cannot find that web site and I will dig out the contact info. On many C&Cs there is no balsa for the first few inches inward from the toe rail. Other listers have mentioned they stopped small toe rail leaks by tightening the bolts and squeezing the butyl tape a little tighter. We the co-owners of Calypso are 1.5 years into a 6 month project repairing many issues with the deck including wet/failed balsa core. We are doing the work ourselves however I see the wisdom of having professional assistance if the $$ work out. Let me know if you have any balsa related questions. I understand this is a big project and I have professional help on core repair and the awl grip job to get it done. That said, I would greatly appreciate assistance on re-bedding the toe rail and any issues that anyone has come across in prepping the deck for priming/painting. I have given myself until next May to get everything done, although I want the toe rail re-bedded and the deck painted by this fall at the latest. I have other projects to complete over the winter-----and no I will not be replacing the Atomic 4. I love my 35 mk I. Hopefully this will bring her to showroom condition. Thanks in advance.
