One thing I noticed in the neighborhood: modules/gen-uni-tables lists str_startswith and str_endswith as dependencies, but as far as I can see it doesn't actually depend on those two modules because it has copies of the relevant code. Is that dependency intended?
Thanks for the careful review. I installed the patch with the
corrections you suggested, along with another fix to lib/backupfile.c
(where my patch had an obvious blunder), one more strcmp->streq change
in lib/setlocale.c, and some minor indenting fixups.
