Well, I checked in the root history:

     # history | grep libjpeg  | grep ln
 1802  ln -sv libjpeg.so.8.0.2 /usr/lib/libjpeg.so.8
 1996  history | grep libjpeg  | grep ln

and it did not work for me. Why, no idea. I was looking for it in the hope I 
had linked the other way to 8.4.0 libraries and so to explain my
difference.

If you do not mind, you might try to see that moving out lib version 
8.4.0 will not break anything, just un case keep it elsewhere. After 
more people checking it, a recommendation either for changing the link 
or removing the old files could be added to the page in BLFS.
