Hi all
Just a minor observation/suggestion:
I have installed and used the latest vlc-2.2.4 with the suggested patches
and noticed that vlc reported many errors on mkv files that played perfectly
fine with mpv. Also, it seemed to almost always fail to show the subtitles
on mkv. I then compiled and installed libebml and libmatroska and recompiled
vlc with support for libmatroska and all those problems were gone.
My suggestion therefore would be to move libmatroska/libebml from optional
to recommended dependencies, as it seems to drastically improve the vlc
expierience.
However, I am still using the 2.8.5 version of ffmpeg and therefore did not
apply the ffmpeg3 patch. Could be be that upgrading to ffmpeg3 will also
solve the mkv problems.
Hi Tim,
I assume you are using vlc from a term, otherwise you would not see
those error messages ? I've never used subtitles, but I have a
number of medium-quality files which I packaged as mkv : ignoring
subtitles, are you getting apparent problems playing your mkv files ?
No, I was using the qt5 interface, the messages appear as popups, such
as "unknown audio codec" and "unknown video codec", but vlc is then
still playing both audio and video.
Actually, if any of my availables files do have subtitles, I've no
idea how to9 access those in vlc : any pointers ?
In the gt5 gui, there is a menu entry "subtitles".
The problem with recommending extra packages is that we have to add
them to the book. Perhaps a comment like 'improves the display of
subtitles' for the libmatroska dep in vlc might suffice ?
Yes, I realize that, and then the book gets bigger and bigger, and less
maintainable. Regarding those two packages, they play very nice and only
need the standard
./configure --prefix=/usr --disable-static && make && make install
but I get your point.
Also, what is 'mpv' ? It sounds like it might be an abbreviation
for MPlayer ?
Yes, the website says "mpv is a fork of mplayer2 and MPlayer.". It is a
gui-less, keyboard-driven movie player, really quick to start and plays
almost anything. I would even recommend it, but there seems to be no
shortage of movie players in blfs. If you want to have a look:
https://mpv.io/
Also links against ffmpeg, and some other stuff already in blfs.
Bye
Tim
