Hi,

How it compares to other DFS (glusterFS, etc...) ?

Hi, Dernat.

I switched to it from RozoFS. The erasure coding in LizardFS works well and we have survived no end of near disasters caused by power failures, dead UPS batteries, disk failures and chunkserver crashes: It is robust!

This might be useful if you want to compare LizardFS with alternatives:

https://sysadmin.libhunt.com/lizardfs-alternatives

As I mentioned before, LizardFS is available pre-compiled in the Debian and Ubuntu repositories e.g.:

ajt@beluga:~$ lsb_release -d
Description: Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS
ajt@beluga:~$ apt list '*lizard*'
Listing... Done
lizardfs-adm/focal 3.12.0+dfsg-4ubuntu1 amd64
lizardfs-cgi/focal,focal 3.12.0+dfsg-4ubuntu1 all
lizardfs-cgiserv/focal 3.12.0+dfsg-4ubuntu1 amd64
lizardfs-chunkserver/focal 3.12.0+dfsg-4ubuntu1 amd64
lizardfs-client/focal 3.12.0+dfsg-4ubuntu1 amd64
lizardfs-common/focal,focal 3.12.0+dfsg-4ubuntu1 all
lizardfs-master/focal 3.12.0+dfsg-4ubuntu1 amd64
lizardfs-metalogger/focal 3.12.0+dfsg-4ubuntu1 amd64

This makes it very easy to install and it is easy to monitor via a cgi-based web-interface. The main reason I stopped using RozoFS was that it is difficult to administer and monitor unless you pay for Rozo-System's proprietary admin tools. That said, I still think the Mojette transform used by RozoFS for erasure coding is much better than the Reed-Solomon codes used by LizardFS and most other DFS's.

I gave a talk about RozoFS a while ago that you might be interested in:
