I had a lecture on "Secure coding" last week and the c was frowned upon again for obvious reasons. I think it's narrow minded and gives out the wrong message when the programmer is not included in the equation.
I wonder what they recommended instead. It's easy to criticize something without offering an alternative, as the alternatives would be open to their own criticisms. A steering wheel and a hand-brake make a driver feel safe, but maybe don't make the passenger feel safe. If the passenger pays for the car and doesn't trust the driver he may prefer to pay for airbags and a speed regulator. Airbags don't make you safe in an airplane, so we're used to trusting in the professionalism of the pilot, but cars have become ubiquitous. Programmers think of ourselves as jet pilots, but many businesses think of us as taxi drivers: we don't speak English, and they are willing to pay for airbags :-) Peter
