exceptions - g95 is pretty good, and intel's ifort is free for academic use.)

unless this has changed, Intel compilers are free for "non-commercial" use,
which Intel defines somewhat unusually.  an academic cannot use it for
research, such research is probably compensated-for.  that would even apply
to grad-student stipends...
