Trust me I'm an electrical engineer ;-) So while Beaglebones run on 5v nominally, the Beaglebone Blue has a wide input voltage for the DC barrel and is actually marked 12V. From what I gather, it can handle 6v to 18v which is good for robotics, ie. It intended use case. In fact you have to power by this if you want to use the motor drivers.
