Maybe it's using an old lib? Or maybe the SVN checkout needs a "make
clean" first.

I would remove the SVN-compiled one (sudo make uninstall should remove
*most* of it) and install the nightly apt package:
http://wiki.apertium.org/wiki/Ubuntu

I've tried

  apertium-get  fra-cat && cd apertium-fra-cat && printf  "participer
à\nconsacrer à\n" |apertium -d . fra-cat

on several machines now, so I believe it should be a matter of getting
lttoolbox updated.
