Hi, I do not want to join in the debate of Android vs iOS, but in our iOS solution, we do use full screen for phone (shake for menu) and toolbar (similar to ActionBar) for tablet, as shake does not make sense for a big device.
For Android we still need to support older devices with menu button and newer devices without menu buttons. Our current solution (show menu button and action bar for Android 4 phones) got accepted by users and we are looking for a solution for tablet (as the menu won't come out for Android 4 tablet).
