I know they will - but what can we do? The navigation bar is already there. 
Not having a menu is another option (our iPhone version use shake to show 
menu), as other options you mentioned...we have tried.

1st option still take up space in canvas. The trigger part is interesting. 
Tried shake but user does not like. Gesture will interfere with the 
painting as the kids constantly use their fingers to draw stuffs, so you 
can't be sure whether it is a dot or long press, a multitouch gestures (to 
draw lines) or trying to execute a command.

Anyway, do you know whether it is possible to show Action Bar only on 
tablet? That's the solution I am currently looking for.
