Or a DECT cordless handset.

If you convert to IP, are you still going to use copper between buildings?  Or 
fiber?  I think it would be easier to protect POTS than Ethernet against 
lightning.

Any chance you can get the customer to ditch pots entirely, no ATA, and have 
them buy some sip headphones? Yealink sip-t22p are around $40 on eBay.

A lot less hassle than trying to do analog:digital:analog with any degree of 
reliability.
