I didn’t look it up so I don’t know for certain but I think they add some low level subcarriers slightly out of band to add the digital signal. With AM digital they phase shift the whole carrier. We have a local FM station I like to listen to but when going in and out of digital range there was a very significant change in the level of the audio. I bitched to the station engineer for several years about this. Digital was louder than all the other station too which reminds me back when people started using audio compression on broadcast radio. Mostly an AM rock thing. But I digress, to “help” this station I even made a video from my car of my radio which has the HD light come on when it starts using the digital content where you could hear the loudness increase. He claimed he had a fancy test instrument to test for this. Eventually they got it fixed.

Finally I looked it up and found out that FM “HD Radio” means digital, and when the signal gets weaker, the radio uses the analog signal which doesn’t have the additional information. Not exactly what I thought HD meant. Thanks, marketing people. It helped that I was using an excellent AM car radio from a 1950s Cadillac that I had modified to run on house current.
