Hello Felix,

yes, you were right - NVIDIA GeForce 7100 is supported by nouveau. My fault! First there was an old kernel running without the nouveau kernel module and then the nouveau kernal module was blacklisted by the nonfree nvidia stuff.
Because of running the nonfree nvidia without any success, I removed them as you suggested by purgeing *vidia*. Purgeing xserver-xorg-video-nouveau leeds to a low resolution fallback - so I installed it again and libdrm-nouveau2 was (and is) already installed. When I now start the gdm.service (or the graphical.target), I first get the login screen only without a properly working mouse (no visible pointer but due to mouse movement user entries get somehow highlighted as active). When I then login, the screen resolution is basically OK but the whole gnome-session is extremely instable and the dmesg output lists a lot of ugly ("write ... FAULT") entries:

Mmmm ... would it make sense to purge all the firmware packages next? ... As I see, you don't use any of these.

Thanks and regards,

I doubt that's true. I have several Stretch installations with old GeForce gfxchips.
These two hosts have similar in age to the 7100: 8400GS roughly a year newer, 6150SE,
roughly the same age (series is older, but specific chip was released 6 months after
the 7x00 series was initially released).

I suggest you try:

1-purge *vidia* and everything directly related to proprietary driver installation
2-purge xserver-xorg-video-nouveau
3-ensure libdrm-nouveau2 is installed
4-ensure there's nothing left to update from Jessie to Stretch

There could be other packages never installed or upgraded to Stretch from Jessie, but
since I have at least two GeForce oldies working, I'd think you should be able to too.
The Xorg nouveau might work, but I've had no reason I can remember to try it on these
two hosts.

Note that my installations all use Trinity as Xorg's DM and default DE.
