And when I say "old", I mean about 5 > years ago, which may predate the synaptics driver, I don't know. there's an old state diagram in docs/tapndrag.dia that claims if the timeout is hit after the second press, tap-n-drag should still take effect. so what you're seeing is likely a bug but you'd need to dig into the state machine handling in the driver to figure out where it's going wrong.
