yes, of course this is possible, but the plugin has many advantages:
* easier deployment in enterprise environments for a large user base
* extra features like calendar subscription via one button as opposed to
manually subscribing to a SOGo calendar URL (which is not possible for
many users)

did anyone test the new TB LTS release with SOGo plugin yet? Is there
a timeline for TB 140 support?
I had a (very) quick look and unfortunately it seems like we need some
adjustments to make the plugin work.
I would happily volunteer to do some testing to aid with the
development but I don't have any relevant experience to develop the
necessary patch.
