I have soooo much running that rebooting is a last effort. It is not

On the "Startup Application Preferences", reached via:
System->Preferences->Personal->Startup Applications
there are two tabs, one labeled "Options". On this tab is a
checkbox to "Automatically remember running applications when
logging out". They are then "restored" upon login. Note, if
you run multiple workspaces, the restored apps may not be in
the same workspace.
Sometimes that works in Xfce, and sometimes, not so well.
All my Thunar windows open to directories I am working in.
All the mousepads with notes I am editing/updating.
Geany does a decent job restarting
As does LibreOffice, but you have to "recover" all open files.
Xfce's pdf viewer is a mixed bag. Typically opens and shows what you
had open last session.
My 4 instances of Thunderbird never start right, and I have to do each
separately.
Then there are my 15 or so open instances of Firefox...
All the terminals open to different working directories. Like where I
have my Internet Drafts to run xml2rfc to build the drafts.
Just a lot going on, much I may use for the day and not come back to
needing it for a couple days, but I keep it all open.
I really like Linux desktops; I could never have done this in Win...
