Hmm odd. Both of those make.log files show essentially the same output, and both seem to indicate that nvidia.ko did in fact successfully build both times.
I wonder if it is just a timing issue (as described in bug #438398) where X tries to boot before DKMS has finished building the driver. I'll check with mario.
