I have freezing frequently at Ubuntu 12.04 using Gnome-Shell. Everything freezes but the mouse, but it is useless because do not create none event by clicking. It just moves.
I Can press CTRL + ALT + [1...6] to change TTY and sometimes I can restart GDM and everything works fine. But sometimes is useless.
