I installed 295.49 from the ubuntu-x-swat ppa for 12.04 (http://www.ubuntuupdates.org/ppa/ubuntu-x-swat?dist=precise). Compiz no longer crashes and OpenGL applications (I tried Stellarium) work now with acceptable performance. (Unity3d performance is still not perfect, but I don't that's a driver issue.)
