I've tested the new 8.623 (Catalyst 9.7) on my HD 3870 (R670) from Karmic (2.6.31-5-24), started with a new xorg.conf, aticonfig --initial and have the same issue: black screen. On the old kernel 2.6.28-14 the new 8.623 works, but without 2D support (horrible!). I use radeonhd now (no gaming today ;-( ).
