Same problem. Fresh install of 11.04 64-bit. Using recommended, current version NVIDIA accelerated graphics driver. "This driver is activated but not currently in use." No hardware acceleration works; neither the Unity desktop nor glxgears. Removing the NVIDIA additional driver and going back to the generic driver has things work fine (if not terribly speedy).
