thank you very much for your advice - it worked :-)
 
In my case the problem was aswell the NVIDIA® GTX™ graphic card.
For the installation I looked up in: https://linuxconfig.org/how-to-install-the-nvidia-drivers-on-ubuntu-18-04-bionic-beaver-linux
 
First I detect the model of my nvidia graphic card and the recommended driver.
 $ ubuntu-drivers devices
the recommendation was the nvidia-drivers-396




$ sudo apt install nvidia-396



And now restart and shut down is working like it should :-)

I have a laptop with similar but not equal specs. I've had issues with logging in. As soon as I logged in the entire system froze. Turned it was the driver for my graphics card.
It is the same, or at least very similar as yours, NVidia 1050 GTX GeForce. It was a fresh install, the Nouveau driver froze the system, then the proprietary driver nvidia-390 didn't help either.
 
The only solution for me was to add the ppa from the grapchics drivers team: https://launchpad.net/~graphics-drivers/+archive/ubuntu/ppa, and install the nvidia-graphics-drvers-396 package.
 
I don't understand these logs, I'm not technically skilled in this :-) .  I only could see one line with 'failed', and your problem seems to be different, since it is on shutdown, not  logging in, but since you have the same, or at least very similar graphics card, maybe it is something to look into.
If you want to try it, be really sure to backup, since it is a development ppa.

@lukefromcd   Good to hear that the laptop is still usable. However I will make backups to be on the save side.
If the problem is connected to my hardware, here are some hardware facts:
 
Laptop: HP Pavilion 17-ab440ng Notebook5-8300H Full HD SSD
processor: Intel® Core™ i5-8300H processor, Quad-Core
grafic card: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050Ti grafic
chip set: Intel® HM370
random access memory: 8 GB DDR4-2666 SO-DIMM
hard disk: 1,128 GB Hybrid Consisting of: 2 hard drives, 1 TB 5400 U/min SATA,128 GB M.2 SSD
 
To summarize it, I can not do something.  But maybe the update of the Ubuntu Studio in October could fix this problem, or?

I've had something that looks a bit like this caused by an application that I didn't shut down causing the reboot to hang.  Only a power cycle shut the system down.  I've learned to close all applications before rebooting as a result.
