Thanks for the reverse patch - from this I was able to reduce it down to
a few changes which seems to fix the problem with my VirtualBox test
environment.

Paravirtualisation patching of kernel trips a kernel oops when
running in VirtualBox. Turning off interrupts around the
entire paravirtualisation patching process avoids patching
active code inside an interrupt.
