On my Compaq Presario M2000Z the power button is not even recognized by gnome-power-management (no event log), also the lid button doesn't function other than blanking the screen. I think it's rather a kernel problem than of the g-p-m: I removed edgy's version of d-p-m and installed the older dapper version but no difference.
